As the founder of Sportall.ca, I spend a lot of time speaking with Canadian community sport leaders. One message comes through loud and clear: volunteers are the backbone of amateur sport — and we’re running out of them.
Local leagues, recreation programs and grassroots clubs depend on volunteer coaches, managers, convenors, and organizers. Yet many are struggling to recruit and retain enough people to deliver safe, high-quality programming. Fewer volunteers means fewer teams, fewer opportunities for kids and adults to participate, and ultimately a weaker sport system overall.
It’s time we start thinking differently about how we support the people who make community sport possible.
One idea worth serious consideration:
A provincial or federal tax credit for adults who volunteer with community-run amateur sport and recreation organizations.
A modest, well-designed credit could:
* Incentivize new volunteer participation
* Recognize the thousands of hours Canadians already contribute
* Reduce the burden on over-stretched clubs
* Improve access to safe, affordable grassroots programming
* Strengthen the pipeline that feeds provincial and national sport systems
Volunteerism has always been at the heart of Canadian sport. But relying solely on goodwill is no longer enough. A tax credit would be a practical and forward-thinking way to support the volunteers who support our communities.
If we want strong national and provincial sport systems, it starts with strong local ones. And strong local ones start with the people who show up — often quietly — to make them run.
I’d love to hear perspectives from others working in sport, recreation, or community development. Is it time to rethink how we support volunteers in Canada?
